Stonnington Jazz 2017: a celebration of all-Australian talent

The award-winning Stonnington Jazz 2017 returns for its 12thth year to present more extraordinary performances by Australian artists, both established and emerging, across a wide variety of jazz styles. The festival will run from 11 May to 21 May and Chelsea Wilson will return as Artistic Director for the second consecutive year.

“I’m honoured to take the reins once again for this stunning festival, which truly celebrates the richness of our local artists and creates opportunities for public collaboration and participation. It is such a thrill to work with the wonderful musicians we have in our home-grown jazz community and the City of Stonnington,” says Chelsea.

In an exciting premiere for Stonnington Jazz, Kate Ceberano celebrates the 30-year anniversary of her debut solo jazz album, Kate Ceberano and Her Septet. In a one-off performance at Malvern Town Hall on Saturday 20 May, Kate will relive the magic of her 1987 Gold Certified release featuring classic standards and stunning interpretations of songs such as ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’, ‘One Note Samba’ and ‘Midnight Sun’. Since the success of her first solo effort, Kate has gone on to become one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. With five platinum albums, five gold albums, a Logie nod and multiple ARIA awards, Kate has sold over 1.5 million albums in Australia alone and was the first woman to be inducted into the Australian Songwriters Association Hall of Fame. In the stunning surrounds of the Malvern Town Hall, join Kate Ceberano and Her Septet for an unforgettable evening of jazz, storytelling and soulful style.

Stonnington Jazz combines class, quality entertainment and a sumptuous menu for a special Mother’s Day Jazz High Tea event on Sunday 20 May. Hosted in the elegant surrounds of the Malvern Town Hall, the event will treat their mothers to a decadent afternoon grazing on delicious macaroons, cakes, sandwiches, champagne and tea. Olivia Chindamo, winner of the 2016 Bell Award for Young Australian Artist of the Year and recipient of the James Morrison Generations in Jazz scholarship, is set to delight and entertain all ages with her trio featuring Craig Fermanis on guitar and Sam Anning on double bass.

Two legends of Australian music – Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky – re-unite for one night only at Chapel off Chapel on Friday 12 May. Hear their collection of timeless songs, beautiful melodies and heartfelt lyrics as they perform pieces from their 2016 ARIA award-winning album Provenance. The Grabowksy-Jones musical partnership has spanned more than three decades full of beautiful moments. Their collaborative efforts have spawned a catalogue of excellent recorded works and countless virtuosic stage encounters. First working together in the eighties when Paul was Vince’s music director, their new album Provenance marks a reunion revitalised and renewed. Their artful, uncompromising style is wondrously revealed in this intimate, pared-back vocals and piano only format. In the gorgeous surrounds of the Chapel, be transcended by the unforgettable sound of two of Australia’s finest jazz masters.

After the success of last year’s wildly popular Mad Jazz event at The Astor, Stonnington Jazz is thrilled to announce this year’s Mad Jazz 2. The Shaolin Afronauts will take over St Kilda’s iconic theatre on Tuesday 16 May to reinterpret the Mad Max 2 score live alongside a screening of the film. The eleven-piece Adelaide band led by Ross McHenry will bring their distinct brand of interstellar-futurist afro-soul and otherworldly funk to ensure a completely unique Mad Max experience. It’s Jazz amped to the Max. It’s Mad Jazz. You would be mad to miss it.

“It’s fantastic to see this exceptional festival back for another year and we’re thrilled to be supporting and showcasing some of Australia’s best jazz talent right in amongst some of Stonnington’s most iconic venues. I welcome everyone to Stonnington Jazz, young and old, locals and visitors alike to join these incredible world-class musicians for a festival like no other”, said Cr Jami Klisaris, Mayor, City of Stonnington.

The complete Stonnington Jazz Festival program will be available in late-March, featuring more than 20 events over 11 days in more than 10 venues across the City of Stonnington.
